150 Years and Still Going Strong
May 12, 2021, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Brennan & Geraghty's Store celebrates a major milestone in our history. Trading from 1871 and closing in 1972. The last owner, George Geraghty, left behind an historical legacy which we are able to celebrate today. George had a basic wish to see the Store reach 100 years of trade, he accomplished that and continued on for another year before finally closing the doors. George left behind a vast array of stock, ledgers, invoices, trading records and advertising material which helps us to understand elements of social history from a time when Maryborough was a port of entry for new migrants into Australia.
Between the 1860s and 1900 over 22,000 immigrants came into Australia through the Port of Maryborough, they shopped in stores such as Brennan & Geraghty's. With the survival of the trading records we are able to research buying habits of the Store Customers.
What's On Offer
The Store is a time capsule of a period which is gone forever. We are able to step into a former business that had trading links to Europe, the British Isles, the United States and Asia. Importing goods direct into Maryborough enabled Brennan & Geraghty to grow their business into a large empire which included: three orchards, two brickyards, a gravel works, a hotel, a cab hire company, a nursery, a factory for the production of wine, jams, chutney, marmalade, cordial and other products - all of which were sold through their General Store. To-date we have indexed over 10,000 customers names from the trading records of the Store - perhaps we have found your ancestor. Come for a covid-safe visit and help us celebrate our unique history.
