Royal Bull’s Head Inn gets a youthful boost as Harristown Clontarf Academy Students Breathe New Life into Heritage!

Harristown State High School students, part of the Clontarf Foundation, have embraced a remarkable opportunity to engage in a hands-on community project at the historic Royal Bull's Head Inn in Drayton. This exciting work experience program not only offers these young men practical skills but also connects them with the rich heritage of the region.

Every Wednesday during Term 3 of 2024, the students worked under the expert guidance of Heritage Site Coordinator Sharon Kinnear. Together, they tackled vital projects such as removing crusher dust from historic cobblestones, setting up spaces for upcoming events, and creating beautiful garden beds. ‘Their dedication and teamwork have made a tangible impact on the upkeep and revitalisation of this iconic heritage property, said Sharon Kinnear Site Manager of Royal Bull’s Head Inn.’

The program began with an inspiring tour of the Royal Bull’s Head Inn, where the students were immersed in the history of the site and its significance to the local community. The historic kitchen sparked curiosity, with the boys enthusiastically discussing how people once lived and worked in the space.

Despite battling icy Toowoomba winds and single-digit temperatures, the students didn’t hesitate to roll up their sleeves and dive into the physical tasks. Their hard work, teamwork, and enthusiasm have earned high praise from Sharon, who noted the boys' pride in representing Harristown SHS and the Clontarf Academy.

In recognition of their efforts, the students were treated to a well-deserved hot chocolate upon their return to school—a small but meaningful gesture to celebrate their achievements.

This program will return in February 2025 with the start of the new school year, offering more students the chance to contribute to the preservation of this cherished heritage site. Beyond providing valuable work experience, the program fosters resilience, teamwork, and a sense of pride in giving back to the community. As one participant shared, ‘We can’t wait to come back and keep making a difference!’

The Royal Bull’s Head Inn, a National Trust Queensland property, is proud to host these students and be part of their journey. This initiative aligns with the Trust’s mission to promote and protect Australia’s natural and cultural heritage, including the heritage of Australia’s First Peoples. Through education and hands-on engagement, the program ensures that places like the Royal Bull’s Head Inn are preserved and cared for, inspiring future generations to continue this vital work.

This partnership showcases how community collaboration and education can make a lasting impact, keeping history alive while empowering the leaders of tomorrow.
