Memories of a Time at The Bull's Head, Drayton
As told by Hugh Smith
In 1929, at the age of 14, Hugh Smith left his hometown of Pittsworth to begin his first job away from home at The Bull's Head Inn in Drayton.
On the occasion of his 90th birthday, Hugh was interviewed by Alistair Silcock from The Pittsworth Sentinel, where he shared some of his memories:
“I remember being woken up every morning by Mrs. Lynch, who would come up the stairs carrying a candle.”
“It was 3 o’clock, and she’d light the candle in my room.”
“We had to milk 20 cows in time for Fred Wuth’s milk run to Toowoomba.”
Other stories that Hugh shared with his family included:
- The dairy was located at the back of the inn.
- One of the biggest challenges was finding the cows amongst the prickly pear in time for milking!
- He also did odd jobs for Mrs. Lynch and was invited to share meals with the Lynch family.
- He lived in the middle room upstairs at the front of the Inn. The walls and ceiling of the bedroom were lined with calico.
- Water was drawn from a well in the backyard.
