QHeritage – A new guideline for designing in the context of heritage places

Midtown Centre, Brisbane

QHeritage is part of the Queensland Government’s QDesign series, which includes a collection of guideline documents that are aimed at supporting positive design outcomes as part of future architectural and urban design projects.

The QHeritage document provides practical, easy-to-understand information to assist anyone who’s involved with designing and developing in the context of a heritage place – from specialists within the industry, through to owners. The document repositions heritage as an opportunity, rather than a restraint, and demonstrates how heritage places can play a key role in shaping suburbs and cities that are dynamic and unique.

The document is set out around three key themes, which include:

APPRECIATION describes what ‘heritage’ is, its value in shaping our future cities, and the statutory context that relates to development in the context of heritage-listed places in Queensland.

ATTITUDE defines the key considerations to be aware of when working with heritage places to ensure that positive outcomes are delivered, both from a heritage perspective and from an urban design perspective.

APPROACH provides a broad outline of some of the common steps in the design process when designing and building in the context of a heritage place, including key tasks or activities, and holding points along the project journey.

Throughout the document, you will also find exemplar case studies of how projects, both in Queensland and more broadly across the country and internationally, have demonstrated the three main themes of the QHeritage guide.

The QHeritage guide, along with additional information around the guide, can be found below, or contact the Office of the Queensland Government Architect for any additional information:
